A question that we at FASTSIGNS get almost on a daily basis is "what is wayfinding signage?". Wayfinding signage is any type of sign that provides Direction, Identification, Warning, or Information. This type of sign exists to help your clients and customers find their way around your business without lengthy explanations or complicated maps. With the correct wayfinding signage to guide customers/clients along the way, they should be able to find their destination with ease.

What Are the Different Types?

When it comes to Wayfinding signage there are four main types. The four are Directional, Identification, Warning, and Informational.

Directional signage - This type of wayfinding signage definitely has the largest range of all the types of wayfinding signage. Directional signage allows your customers and clients to get a full glimpse of your business, so they can navigate themselves around your establishment with ease. With directional signage you can easily communicate to your clients or customers the locations of your elevators, stairs, different sections of your business, washrooms, and more. When it comes to directional signage, they'll take the form of maps.

Identification Signage - This type of wayfinding signage is a fantastic way to help point out key features and services that your customer or client will need to know while they are at your establishment. An example of this might be to indicate where the public washroom signs are, or the location of a customer service kiosk.  Identification signage is an important way to draw attention to something a customer needs to know.

Examples include fire safety signs, wet or slippery floor signs, private property, high voltage, Do Not Enter signs, stop signs, etc. Additionally, other forms of this type of signage that mark the key safety features in your building are all extremely important to have. Please keep in mind that Warning Signage is not only helpful to your customers and clients,it may also be mandatory.
