FASTSIGNS® of Lexington, KY Celebrates 30 Years in Business
(LEXINGTON, KY) December 1, 2020 - FASTSIGNS® of Lexington, KY celebrated 30 years in business this year. Franchisee Conda Marcum was originally from Lexington, and her husband and fellow franchisee, Don Marcum, was a former professional race car driver. During their time in the racing world, they would order all of their sponsor decals from out of town. As a result, they could see that Lexington had a need for what a FASTSIGNS center could provide. Over the past three decades, the business has experienced a myriad of changes over some historic milestones including the Gulf War, 9/11, the recession and now a pandemic.
“It is surprising how rapidly technology has changed and advanced over the past three decades, and it continues to improve,” said Don Marcum.
This center is truly a locally-owned and family-run business. With five family members in-house, they work closely as a team and attribute much of their business success to selecting great employees.
“We participate in as much training as possible and stay active with the other franchisees in the FASTSIGNS network,” said Conda Marcum. “Just doing what you say you will do and old fashioned hard work counts for a lot.”
Each year, the team looks forward to working with the Kentucky Three Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park, an event that showcases the best of Kentucky in a beautiful setting. They shared how fortunate they are to have had loyal customers for many years including Toyota, Link-Belt, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College, Centre College and so many more. The team also works with a variety of companies made up of different sizes.
“We enjoy ideas and projects that small local businesses bring to us and how they allow us to partner with them,” said Don. “We never look at a sign as a small part of any project. We try to keep in mind that this sign is a reflection not only on us but on the business or person we are making it for.”
When asked about what advice he might offer to other business owners, Don shared the importance of having a good business plan but being open to change.
“Think outside the box,” said Don. “Sometimes customers will push you in a direction that you weren't expecting, so be open to that opportunity.”
With new products coming out such as digital signage and 3D printers and an emphasis on interior decor, signs are evolving in new ways. With two of their sons and their daughter-in-law aboard the team, they look forward to watching them take the business where their own vision leads.
