Event Signage: Using Directories and Wayfinding Signs to Enhance Your Event Experience

by Christina Krenek

Wayfinding may not be the first thing you think about when planning or attending an event, but making sure people can easily navigate your event plays a key role in helping them have a great experience. Whether it's a charity gala, corporate convention, 5K fun run, trade show or community festival, having the right wayfinding and directory signage in place enhances any event. Here are a few sign and visual graphic ideas to point the way to a better experience:

Structural Signs and Graphics. Direct event participants and attendees using strategically-placed wayfinding signs in and around your venue. Take advantage of walls, stairs, elevators, columns and other building structures by applying temporary directional graphic decals. Make sure entrances, exits and restrooms are clearly identified and easy for people to find by using signs on doors and hanging from the ceiling.

Digital Signs. Using digital directories and interactive displays help keep people informed. Stand-alone kiosks or wall mounted screens can display multiple messages during your event, such as activity schedules, safety information, seat maps and vendor information.

Floor Graphics. Communicate targeted messages and direct people throughout your venue by placing wayfinding signs and graphics at people’s feet – on the floor. Using durable floor graphics and decals helps guide attendees as they’re walking.

Printed Materials. In addition to the directory and wayfinding signs placed throughout your event venue, give attendees event information in their hands using printed materials, such as flyers, brochures or booklets. Include a detailed map of your venue and an agenda of events. After the event, attendees can use the printed materials as a keepsake.

Wearables. It’s incredibly important that people can easily identify your event staff and security guards. Give your staff event branded t-shirts, hats and badges so that attendees can easily find them and know who they can ask for help or directions if needed.
