What the 2010 ADA Standards Actually Require

The 2010 ADA Standards set precise technical requirements for tactile and accessible signage. Getting these right at the fabrication stage is far less costly than correcting non-compliant signs after installation.

Raised Characters & Grade 2 Braille

Raised characters on tactile signs must sit at least 1/32 inch above the background surface, be uppercase and sans serif, and fall between 5/8 inch and 2 inches in height. Those characters must be duplicated in Grade 2 braille positioned below the corresponding text, with at least 3/8 inch of separation from other tactile characters or raised borders.

Mounting Height

The baseline of the lowest tactile character on a sign must be mounted between 48 and 60 inches above the finished floor. Correct mounting height is a placement requirement, not just a fabrication one, which is why coordinated installation matters.

Finish & Color Contrast

Signs with visual or tactile characters must have a non-glare finish. Characters and their background must contrast clearly, using either light characters on a dark background or dark characters on a light background. No specific contrast ratio is prescribed, but the visual distinction must be evident.

What Falls Outside These Requirements
