Yard Sign, It’s the sign that tells you who to vote for and who is selling your house. Yard signs might have gotten you your first job or introduced you to your favorite restaurant , and it’s what told you that they are doing curbside pick up only and then told you that seating is available. It's what congratulated you for graduation if you did that in 2020 and what told you happy birthday.

Yard signs, lawn sign, bootleg sign … etc. It has many names but it’s one of the more affordable ways to communicate messages to your customer or prospects.

In this post I am trying to give a quick guide for how to design, order and place your yard signs.

There is multiple uses for them and each is designed differently. Let’s see:

Bandit signs:

It’s the sign that gets you new customers, to do this right you need to have your service and you phone OR website and NOTHING ELSE. You have 3 second at the most for people to read it and decide if they need what you offer and take out their phone and take a picture of it. Buy it one colored and get 100 quantity or more, this is going to be the cheapest option.

Once you have theses made, check with your city regulations and consider going outside of city limits and expanding your coverage area.

Think traffic. Take into consideration where cars stop or slow. Where they turn or look.

Lawn sign:

This one is more intimate, this should be placed on places you service if you offer a service whether if it’s a real estate, plumbing, landscape… if you are a property manager and want to advertise an event or a business that is hiring, opening, moving, or having a sale. You get the idea.

This sign should be full color, designed professionally as it serves as first impression.

The design should have, logo, what you do and contact information. The graphics should tell the rest.

With lawn signs you usually have more time as it’s better placed in business plazas and front yards.

Wayfinding:

If you have an event or opening a new location and trying to get people somewhere, you need yard signs. Keep it simple, one to 2 words and an arrow.

Political signs.

To do and not to do:

  • Do double sided unless you have a good reason not to.

  • Make sure there is contrast in colors.

  • Negative space is very important for readability.

  • Have your designer leave a white frame around your design.

  • Don’t use your business card design for your yard sign.

  • Don’t tell a story in a yard sign, keep it short.

  • Don’t tell us everything you do, just what you do.

  • Don’t crowd your sign with visuals.

  • Don’t use too many colors.

Tips for placement:

  • Know city regulations

  • Use traffic lights and yard signs

  • Keep it close enough to read

  • Be aggressive but  don’t draw negative attention

  • It’s better to place your yard sign in an angle

  • Seek out unmaintained properties.

  • Consider ladders to place signs on pols

  • Camouflage your sign to blend in to stay longer

  • Use more signs, you need to be seen repeatedly for people to race action.
