Corrugated plastic signs are made from a kind of plastic called polypropylene. Polypropylene is a lightweight, durable plastic which is easy to print on. The inside of the sign features ridges, called corrugations, with two pieces of smooth plastic sandwiched around, giving it strength and stability.
How are Corrugated Plastic Signs Made?
First, three sheets of polypropylene are fused with heat and pressure. One of the sheets has ridges, or corrugations, while the other two are smooth. This sandwich of two plastic sheets is then fed through rollers which press the sheets together. The metal stakes used to support the sign are also inserted during the pressing process.
After the plastic has cooled and hardened, it is cut to size. This is done with a large die, the same size and shape as the finished sign. Once the signs are cut into sign blanks, they are ready for printing.
The printing is usually done digitally, although screen printing is also an option. Digital printing offers more options for color and design, and it is generally more cost-effective for small runs of signs. However, screen printing may be a better choice for large orders and for signs which require special effects.
Once the printing is complete, the signs are finished with any required drilled holes and other hardware. They are then ready to be installed.
