Wayfinding Signs in Green

How a Wayfinding System Guides Visitors

A useful wayfinding system supports four parts of a visitor’s journey: orientation, decision making, route confirmation, and destination recognition. Each part answers a practical question, from identifying a starting position to confirming that the correct room, suite, building, or department has been reached.

Planning generally begins by identifying entrances, destinations, and the points where someone must choose a direction. The information at each point should match what visitors need in that moment. An entrance directory may provide an overview, while a directional sign farther along the route can focus on the next turn.

Maps and directories help people understand a facility before selecting a route. At intersections, elevators, stairwells, and connecting corridors, focused directional cues help visitors choose where to go next.

Confirming the Route & Destination

Confirmation signs reassure visitors that they’re continuing in the right direction. Room and suite signs, building identification, and other destination markers signal that the route is complete. A consistent sign hierarchy helps people distinguish major destinations from supporting directions and individual rooms.

Indoor & Outdoor Directional Sign Options

Wayfinding often begins before a visitor enters a building and continues until the destination is reached. Coordinated exterior and interior signs can create a consistent path from arrival and parking to the building entrance and final room or service area.

Common outdoor wayfinding elements include:

• Parking signs
• Directional signs
• Monument signs
• Building entrance identification

Common indoor wayfinding elements include:

• Directories
• Room and suite signs
• Floor graphics
• Lobby signs
• Directional signs

Offices, medical facilities, schools, retail centers, campuses, and industrial complexes use these sign categories to guide people through larger properties or locations with multiple destinations. In Green, healthcare settings such as Summa Health Green Medical Center illustrate where visitors may need to find parking, an entrance, and a specific destination within the property.

Readable & Accessible Wayfinding Practices

Readable directional signage provides enough information for the next decision without crowding the sign. Ohio’s Accessible Ohio resource recommends accessible, consistent, and clear language, with fewer than five messages or lines of text on each sign.

Familiar pictograms can reinforce written directions and help visitors recognize destinations or services quickly. Consistency matters because changing symbols, terminology, or visual patterns between areas can make a route harder to follow.

You’re Here maps can orient visitors at key entrance points. They work best when they clearly identify the viewer’s current position and show how major destinations relate to it. Directories can complement these maps by listing departments, rooms, suites, or other destinations in an organized format.

Accessibility requirements can depend on the sign type, location, facility, and applicable standards. Organizations should determine which requirements apply to their properties, including any need for tactile content, Braille, or a formal accessibility review.
