ADA Sign Requirements Under the 2010 Standards

Section 703 of the 2010 ADA Standards establishes the technical requirements for accessible signs. For any sign that identifies a permanent room or space, those requirements include raised tactile characters sized between 5/8 inch and 2 inches in height, Grade 2 Braille below the corresponding text, a non-glare finish, and high contrast between the characters and the sign background. Character stroke width, spacing, and proportions are also specified to support legibility.

Mounting location matters as much as the sign itself. Tactile characters and Braille must be positioned so the baseline sits between 48 and 60 inches above the finished floor. Signs go on the wall at the latch side of the door. When latch-side wall space isn’t available, they go on the nearest adjacent wall. The ADA Standards don’t require every room to have an identifying sign, but any sign provided for a permanent room must meet all applicable requirements.

Florida Building Code & State Enforcement

Florida doesn’t simply reference federal ADA requirements. Florida Statute Chapter 553, Part II incorporates those accessibility standards directly into state law, and Florida Building Code Chapter 11 (Accessibility) enforces them through local building department permitting and inspection.
