Custom banners are big signs that you can hang up to share important messages. They’re colorful, easy to see, and work great for many places like schools, offices, or stores. People use banners to welcome visitors, announce events, or give directions. While usually used for temporary signage, banners are actually one of the most durable signage options in all environments and weather conditions.
Why Use Custom Banners?
- They get attention – You can make them big and bright so everyone notices them.
- They are easy to move – You can hang them almost anywhere.
- They last a long time – Banners made of vinyl don’t rip easily and are safe to use outside in the sun or rain.
- They are affordable – Banners cost less than other signs and can be used again and again.
When Should You Use Banners?
- Saying “Welcome!” to guests
- Showing where to park
- Telling people about a job fair or school event
- Sharing your company’s goals or values
- Helping people find the right building or room
You can order banners a few weeks before your event. But it's also smart to keep a few “evergreen” banners like “Now Hiring” or “Event Today” to use anytime. FastSigns of Tucker can usually produce a banner within the day if the artwork is ready and within 2-3 days for in-store designs.
How Do You Hang Banners?
There are two main ways to hang banners:
- Grommets – These are small metal rings in the corners or sides of the banner. You can use rope, zip ties, or hooks to hang them. We typically space them every 3 feet or evenly across the top and bottom of the banner.
- Pole pockets – These are open spaces on the top or bottom of the banner where you can slide in a pole to hold it up. This is especially useful for parades, marches, or protests.
Some banners also come with stands so you can place them on the ground called retractable banners. At FastSigns of Northlake Tucker we always hem all four sides of the banner to increase durability. We can create wind pockets as well, though only upon request. In most environments, wind pockets make the banner more vulnerable to weather conditions by decreasing the structural integrity of the banner.
A Short History of Banners
Banners have been used for a very long time. A long time ago, Roman soldiers carried banners to show which group they were in. The word “banner” comes from old words in French and Latin that mean “cloth sign.” Today, we use vinyl banners that are printed by machines and can have photos, logos, or drawings on them.
Why Banners Are a Smart Choice
Banners are a great way to share messages in a simple and clear way. They are easy to use, not too expensive, and can be used many times. Whether it’s for a school event, a company open house, or just to give directions, banners help people see and understand what’s going on. All of our surrounding communities, Tucker, Northlake, Decatur, Doraville, Embry Hills, Litonia, Chamblee, Stone Mountain and Smoke Rise require temporary permits for banners, but few enforce this code unless banners are prominently displayed facing the street. For event advertisement, we have yet to see code enforcement take issue in Tucker, Northlake, Decatur, Doraville, Embry Hills, Litonia, Chamblee, Stone Mountain or Smoke Rise.
