Signs That Communicate Rules, Hazards & Accessibility

Clear facility communication begins with defining what each sign must convey. Regulatory signs communicate rules, instructions, restrictions, and operational information. They can identify controlled areas or explain conduct required within a particular space.

Safety signs identify hazards, emergency information, protective actions, and restricted areas. Accessible signs identify permanent rooms, accessible features, and routes through a facility. Because these functions differ, one property may need several sign types working together.

Common facility sign categories include:

Regulatory signs: Rules, restrictions, instructions, and required facility information
Safety signs: Hazards, emergency information, protective actions, and restricted areas
Accessible signs: Permanent room identification, accessible features, entrances, exits, and routes

The right combination depends on how a facility is arranged and used. A restaurant, for example, has different operational spaces than an office or medical facility. We work closely with each business to understand its communication goals before developing custom signage solutions.

ADA Signage Planning for Mesa Facilities

A sign plan starts by identifying the spaces involved, the function of each sign, and the information visitors or employees need. Location, readability, accessibility requirements, and installation conditions can all affect design and production.

We provide more than finished signs. Our support includes content development, graphic design, installation, project management, and survey and permitting services. This coordinated approach keeps every stage of a commercial sign project aligned.

Content Development & Graphic Design
Content development establishes what each sign must communicate. Graphic design organizes that information into a clear visual format while accounting for the business’s established identity and the sign’s intended function.

Project Management
Project management coordinates design, production, installation, and permitting-related work. We keep the project moving through each stage while working with the business on its details and objectives.

Survey, Permitting & Installation
Existing conditions and proposed sign locations can influence a project. Our survey and permitting services support planning, while our installation service addresses placement of the completed signs. Requirements should be evaluated for the specific facility before production or installation.

ADA Sign Requirements for Fixed Spaces

Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, signs identifying permanent rooms and spaces must meet tactile and visual character requirements. Tactile characters are raised letters or numbers that can be read by touch. These characters are repeated in Grade 2 Braille, a contracted form of Braille that uses shortened combinations for certain words and letter groups.

Tactile signs require a non-glare finish and color contrast between the characters and background. Raised characters must be at least 1/2 inch high and no more than 2 inches high. If the raised characters also serve as the sign’s visual characters, the minimum character height is 5/8 inch.

Exit Signage
Exit passageways, exit discharge doors, and exit stairways require tactile signs that meet applicable character requirements. These signs should be considered separately from illuminated exit indicators and other visual safety communication within the facility.

Accessible Entrances
When every building entrance isn’t accessible, accessible entrances require the International Symbol of Accessibility. Non-accessible entrances require directional signs indicating the route to the nearest accessible entrance. Placement and route information should reflect the facility’s actual configuration.

Which Facility Signs Need Accessibility Treatment?

Permanent room and space identification requires a different review than temporary notices, promotional graphics, or brand displays. Facility planning should identify fixed spaces, exits, accessible entryways, safety hazards, and required operational information before production.

Signs and displays that aren’t required to follow ADA sign-designation rules include:

Building directories
Menus
Assembly-area seat and row designations
Occupant names
Building addresses
Company names and logos

Items outside the designation rules may still be subject to other requirements. Regulatory, building, fire, or operational standards can affect a sign based on its purpose and location.

Review Requirements Before Production

Accessibility and regulatory requirements should be evaluated against the standards that apply to the specific facility and project. A useful review separates permanent room identification from temporary communication, branding, and promotional displays. It also accounts for location, readability, color contrast, non-glare finishes, and installation conditions.

Our coordinated process brings accessibility, operational requirements, and hazard communication into the broader visual plan. We work with facility managers and business owners in Mesa and Dobson Ranch to define sign functions, organize content, develop graphics, and coordinate production and installation.
