ADA Compliant Signage in Chicago
Regulatory Signs, Safety Signs, & Custom Accessible Signage for Chicago Businesses
Compliant signage isn’t optional for most public-facing businesses. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 requires that buildings be accessible to people with disabilities, and signage is a core part of that obligation. At FASTSIGNS® of Chicago, IL - United Center Park, we handle ADA and regulatory signage from concept through installation, so your space communicates clearly and aligns with the requirements that apply to it.
We bring visual communication teams, graphic designers, and project managers together on every project: one team, one process, and no gaps between design and what ends up on your wall.

ADA Compliant Signs & Regulatory and Warning Signs
Our Regulatory Signs, Safety Signs, and Custom Accessible Signage service covers two core categories that work together in any complete signage program.
ADA Compliant Signs
These signs identify permanent rooms and spaces throughout a building: restrooms, conference rooms, stairwells, elevators, fire exits, entryways, and parking lots. Our custom accessible signage can be designed to complement your building’s aesthetic and incorporate your brand colors and corporate typeface, all within ADA contrast requirements. Signs we produce in this category include both raised characters and braille to support tactile accessibility for visitors with visual impairments.
Regulatory and Warning Signs
These signs inform visitors and staff of laws, regulations, and facility-specific requirements. You’ll find them in stairwells, near fire exits, in parking areas, and anywhere policies like restricted access, no-smoking rules, or dress codes need to be clearly communicated. Together with ADA compliant signs, they form a system that supports a building’s navigation, safety, and accessibility.
We handle content development, graphic design, production, and installation services in-house, so every element of your program moves through a single point of contact.
ADA Sign Specifications Chicago Businesses Need to Know
Chicago businesses operate under three layers of compliance: federal ADA Standards for Accessible Design, the Illinois Accessibility Code, and the City of Chicago Building Code. A sign that meets federal guidelines can still fall short during a city inspection. Knowing the specifications matters.
Here are the core technical requirements for ADA compliant signs:
- Color contrast: Signs must exhibit contrast between background and text colors to ensure readability
- Font: Text must appear in a sans serif font
- Tactile characters: If a sign contains a pictogram identifying a permanent space, tactile text descriptors are also required; pictograms include wheelchair symbols and gender symbols for restroom designation
- Character height: Tactile lettering must be uppercase and between 5/8 inch and 2 inches in height
- Character spacing: For raised characters with rectangular cross sections, the minimum spacing between individual characters is 1/8 inch; for characters with other cross sections, the minimum is 1/16 inch at the base. Characters must also be separated from raised borders and decorative elements by a minimum of 3/8 inch
- Braille placement: Braille must be positioned below the corresponding text; if text is multi-lined, braille is placed below the entire text block. Braille must be separated a minimum of 3/8 inch from any other tactile characters and from raised borders and decorative elements
- Mounting height: The baseline of the lowest raised character must be at least 48 inches above the finished floor; the baseline of the highest raised character must not exceed 60 inches
- Door placement: Interior ADA signs must be installed on the latch side of the door for the room being labeled; signs aren’t mounted directly on a door
- Alternate placement: If the latch-side wall doesn’t provide enough clearance, the sign may be installed on the nearest adjacent wall in a clearly visible location
Full-Service ADA Signage in Chicago, from Design Through Installation
Most businesses don’t have a signage coordinator in-house. Sourcing design from one vendor, fabrication from another, and installation from a third creates room for specification errors and placement mistakes that can be expensive to fix after the fact.
At FASTSIGNS® of Chicago, IL - United Center Park, everything happens under one roof. Our team learns your space, your brand standards, and your compliance obligations, then builds a signage program tailored to all three. We use current technology throughout design and production, and our project managers keep the process on track from first consultation through final installation. As part of a global network with decades of experience, we bring the resources of a national brand with the accountability of a local Chicago team.
