Where Accessible Signs Are Used

Accessible signs identify permanent spaces and help people navigate a property. Common applications include restrooms, elevators, stairways, and other rooms or areas with permanent designations.

Tactile signs use raised text that can be read by touch and include Braille where required. They’re generally installed beside a door on the latch side. When that wall doesn’t provide suitable space, the sign is placed on the nearest adjacent wall.

Permanent room identification signs may need visual and raised characters as well as Braille. Their purpose is to confirm that a person has reached a particular room or space.

Directional and informational signs serve a different function. A sign pointing toward a restroom or posting property rules must meet applicable visual character requirements, but it doesn’t require tactile text or Braille solely because it provides directions or information.

ADA Requirements for Tactile Signs

The 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act Standards establish technical requirements for raised text, Braille, mounting locations, clear floor space, and visual contrast. The applicable features depend on what the sign communicates and how it’s used.

Key requirements for tactile signs include:

Mounting height: The baseline of the lowest tactile character must be at least 48 inches above the finished floor. The baseline of the highest tactile character can’t exceed 60 inches above the finished floor.
Raised-character size: Raised characters must generally measure between 5/8 inch and 2 inches high, based on the uppercase letter I. A limited exception applies when separate raised and visual characters present the same information.
Braille: Contracted Grade 2 Braille, a shortened Braille system using standard contractions, must appear below the corresponding text.
Character separation: Braille must have at least 3/8 inch of separation from other raised text, decorative elements, and raised borders.
Clear floor space: An area measuring at least 18 by 18 inches must be centered on the sign’s tactile content and positioned beyond the arc of a door swinging from closed to 45 degrees open.
Visual contrast: Characters must contrast visually with their background so the message remains distinguishable.

How Accessible, Safety & Regulatory Signs Differ

ADA accessible signage addresses identification and wayfinding through visual, raised, and Braille features where required. Safety and regulatory signs communicate hazards, operational rules, required actions, exits, traffic directions, and site conditions. A safety message doesn’t automatically require raised text, just as a tactile room sign doesn’t necessarily serve as a hazard notice.

A single Eugene property may use tactile room signs at permanent spaces, visual directions and exit communication inside the building, and traffic signs or hazard notices outside.
