Keep Your Sign Visible After Dark

Your exterior message shouldn’t disappear when daylight fades. Electric and light up signs can keep storefront lettering, logos, and graphics visible during evening hours, in shaded locations, and to approaching foot or vehicle traffic.

The right illumination depends on placement, viewing distance, and how the lighting should complement your brand. We guide businesses and organizations through custom illuminated signage options that balance daytime appearance with after-dark readability.

In-House Sign Design & Production in Long Beach

At FASTSIGNS® of Long Beach, CA, we design and manufacture signs in-house, giving clients direct input on style, quality, turnaround time, and price. Our center is locally owned and operated, and we coordinate key stages of each project through one team.

A customer review describes a technically detailed channel-letter replacement project that we managed from start to finish. It offers a relevant example of our ability to coordinate complex sign requirements.

Coordinate Design, Production, & Installation

An illuminated sign involves more than adding a light source. Dimensions, mounting location, viewing angles, electrical access, surrounding architecture, and brightness all need to be considered before production.

Our visual communication capabilities include graphic design, project management, production, and installation. We coordinate these disciplines around the sign’s purpose and confirm the project scope before work begins.

Important decisions may include:

Design alignment: Lettering, colors, logos, and sign face materials should reflect the organization’s visual identity.
Day and night appearance: The design should be reviewed both unlit and illuminated.
Viewing conditions: Sign size and brightness should account for viewing distance, direction, and ambient light.
Production coordination: Approved design details should carry through fabrication and installation planning.

Compare Illuminated Sign Styles

The path light takes through or around a sign determines its appearance and visibility. Product availability and construction methods depend on the project, but these common approaches can help you identify the effect you want.

Common lighting approaches include:

Light box signs: An enclosed cabinet places lighting behind a translucent sign face to create an evenly illuminated panel.
Front-lit lettering: Light travels through the visible letter faces for bold, direct readability.
Backlit or halo-lit lettering: Light shines behind the letters to create a glow around their edges.
Fully illuminated forms: Letters or logos distribute light through multiple visible surfaces for a continuous glow.
LED lighting: Light-emitting diodes provide bright, consistent illumination and generally use less energy than traditional sign lighting systems.

Channel letters are individually formed letters or symbols that can incorporate front, back, or broader illumination. For comparison, an LED display uses electronically controlled light-emitting diodes to present changing content, while LED lighting can also illuminate a static sign.

Match the Lighting to the Sign’s Purpose

Front lighting prioritizes direct message visibility. Halo lighting emphasizes depth, contrast, and a softer outline, while a light box can suit graphics or messages that benefit from an evenly lit panel.

Evaluate each option based on:

Viewing distance: Letters, logos, and graphics need enough scale and contrast for their intended audience.
Ambient light: Nearby streetlights, windows, and neighboring signs affect how the illumination appears.
Mounting surface: Building materials, wall depth, and architectural details influence placement and visual effect.
Indoor or outdoor use: The setting affects materials, weather resistance, lighting intensity, mounting, and electrical planning.

Long Beach Sign Lighting Requirements

City plan review guidance calls for a Title 24 energy efficiency lighting worksheet for sign lighting. Title 24 refers to California’s building energy efficiency standards. Applicable outdoor signs must also use either a photocontrol, which responds to available daylight, or an outdoor astronomical time switch programmed around sunrise and sunset.

City guidance also addresses sign outlets, electrical disconnects, grounding, and unwanted light trespass beyond the intended area. Requirements can vary by sign type, property, electrical conditions, and city review, so these factors should be identified during project planning.

Plan a More Visible Branded Sign

Tell us where the sign will be used, what it needs to communicate, and how customers will approach the location. We can coordinate graphic design, in-house production, project management, and installation planning around those needs, then prepare a quote for the confirmed scope.
