Three Channel Letter Styles for Every Brand

Your channel letter sign should fit your building, reflect your brand, and connect with your audience. We offer three illumination styles to achieve the right look.

Face Illuminated Channel Letters: LED light shines through a translucent acrylic face, making letters bright, bold, and easy to read from a distance. This style is well suited to retail storefronts and high foot-traffic locations where visibility is the priority.
Reverse Illuminated Channel Letters: Also called halo channel letters or backlit channel letters, these are mounted slightly off the wall so LED light casts a soft glow behind a solid face. The architectural, understated effect is a natural fit for medical practices, professional service firms, and corporate offices.
Combination-Lit or Front/Back Lit Channel Letters: Front and back illumination run simultaneously for a high-contrast, multi-color effect. This style makes a strong visual statement in dense commercial corridors.

Individual letter components can be constructed from acrylic and aluminum sheeting in a wide range of colors, sizes, and fonts, so there’s no need to compromise on brand accuracy. The right style depends on your brand aesthetic, building architecture, and the impression you want to make.

One Team Handles Every Phase of Your Project

A channel letter project involves more than fabricating letters. Before Installation can begin, someone must conduct a site survey, develop and approve a design, file permit applications, and coordinate with your landlord or building management. We handle these details under one roof, giving you a single accountable team throughout the project.

Our visual communication professionals, project managers, and graphic designers take your project from the first conversation through completed Installation. Our channel letter services include:

We can also help during the research phase, evaluating options and helping you direct your budget toward a high-quality sign built to last.

Louisville Businesses That Rely on Channel Letter Signs

Channel letters serve a wide range of commercial tenants and business types. These are some of the Louisville businesses we work with most often:

Retail storefronts and shopping center tenants use channel letters to identify their location and satisfy sign criteria in commercial lease agreements.
Restaurants and hospitality businesses rely on lit channel lettering to stay visible during evening hours when foot traffic peaks.
Medical, dental, and healthcare offices often choose reverse-lit letters for a professional appearance that fits clinical brand standards.
Corporate offices and professional service firms use halo-style channel letters for an architectural look that reflects their positioning.
Fitness centers, salons, and service businesses in competitive commercial corridors choose face-lit letters for high-visibility street presence.

Channel letters can support commercial tenant identification and commercial lease sign criteria, making them a practical consideration for many tenants, not just a branding decision.

How Channel Letter Signs Are Built

Each letter is typically fabricated with aluminum returns, which form its sides and back, and paired with an acrylic face. That combination holds up through the temperature swings and precipitation Louisville, KY sees across the seasons. Most channel letter signs use LED illumination: compared with older neon formats, LEDs provide bright, energy-efficient light with lower maintenance needs over time.

Raceway Mount vs. Direct Flush Mount

The two primary mounting methods produce different looks and suit different building conditions.

Raceway mounting: Individual letters are affixed to a metal raceway box, which is installed as one unit on the building facade. This approach minimizes penetrations into the building surface and simplifies electrical routing, making it a practical choice for many commercial properties.
Direct flush mounting: Letters are mounted individually to the facade for a cleaner, seamless appearance with no visible raceway hardware.

Mounting method is selected based on building structure, facade material, electrical access, and the aesthetic you want to achieve. Our team evaluates those factors during the site survey so the recommendation fits the building before fabrication begins.

The Channel Letter Project Process At FASTSIGNS® of Louisville, KY - Lyndon

Here’s what to expect when you work with our team on a channel letter sign project.

Consultation: We start by learning about your business goals, building layout, brand standards, and budget before any design work begins.
Site Evaluation: We assess the facade, mounting surface, and electrical access. Findings from this step inform letter sizing, mounting method, and how the permit application is structured.
Graphic Design: Our design team develops the letter sizing, color, illumination style, and layout. You review and approve the design before fabrication starts.
Survey and Permitting: We file permit applications with the relevant local authority and address landlord or property manager requirements on your behalf.
Installation: Once fabrication is complete, we coordinate Installation. You don’t need to manage separate contractors or track multiple vendor relationships.

Sign Permitting for Channel Letters in Louisville, KY

Most exterior illuminated signs require a permit. In the Louisville area, the process typically involves zoning approval and coordination with the building’s landlord or manager. Several communities we serve, including Lyndon, Jeffersontown, and Middletown, operate under their own independent zoning authority and may have sign permit requirements that differ from those of the metro government. Local sign codes and lease requirements can affect sign dimensions, placement, and illumination options, and familiarity with those rules is built into our project planning process from the start.

Louisville Metro Sign Regulations & Fees

Permanent attached signs under the metro zoning authority are regulated by Chapters 1 and 8 of the Louisville Metro Land Development Code. Requirements depend on the property’s zoning and form district designation. As of 2026, Louisville Metro Planning & Design Services lists a $200 permit fee for one attached or freestanding sign and a $350 fee for two or more attached or freestanding signs. A Sign Authorization application requesting relief from certain sign requirements carries a listed $250 fee.

Independent & Oldham County Zoning Authorities

Properties outside the metro government’s zoning authority follow the rules of the authority governing that site. In Oldham County jurisdictions, including applicable locations in Prospect and Crestwood, signs must comply with the relevant zoning district regulations and receive a sign permit through Oldham County Planning & Zoning. Fees, dimensions, placement, illumination allowances, and review requirements depend on the governing authority and the property. We file applications with the relevant authority and coordinate applicable landlord or property-management requirements before installation planning is completed.
