ADA Compliant Signs: What They Cover & How They’re Built

ADA compliant signs identify permanent rooms and spaces throughout a facility, including restrooms, conference rooms, stairwells, elevators, fire exits, entryways, and accessible parking areas. Because these signs direct people through a building, their design is governed by specific technical standards that can’t be adjusted for aesthetics alone.

Contrast & Finish Requirements

Signs must provide clear contrast between background and text, using either light characters on a dark background or dark characters on a light background. A non-glare finish is required across the sign face to support readability under varied lighting conditions.

Tactile Characters & Grade 2 Braille

Tactile raised characters must be uppercase, sans serif, and between 5/8 inch and 2 inches in height. Where a sign uses a pictogram to identify a permanent room or space, tactile text descriptors are also required.
