In Houston, these signs are required in permanent-use areas, including stairwells, elevators, fire exits, entryways, and parking lots. ADA Sign Requirements Under the 2010 Standards

The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design set specific technical requirements for how ADA compliant signs must be designed, produced, and installed. The standards cover far more than font choice. Here’s what Houston businesses need to know:

Text & Typography

Signs must use a sans-serif font with no decorative elements. Color contrast between background and text must be clearly defined.

Tactile Characters & Braille

Signs identifying permanent spaces must include both raised tactile characters and Grade 2 Braille. Tactile lettering must be uppercase and between 5/8 inch and 2 inches in height. Braille must be placed below and centered to all text, with a minimum 3/8-inch space between the Braille and other tactile characters, and a minimum 3/8-inch space from raised borders and decorative elements. If the sign includes a pictogram, such as a wheelchair or gender symbol, tactile text descriptors are also required.

Mounting Height & Placement

The baseline of the lowest raised character must sit at least 48 inches above the finished floor; the baseline of the highest raised character can’t exceed 60 inches. Interior ADA signs should be mounted on the latch side of the door for the room being labeled and must not be placed directly on a door. When space at that location is insufficient, the sign may be installed on the nearest adjacent wall in a clearly visible position.
