ADA Signage Requirements: What Businesses Need to Know
Accessible signage requirements cover both what a sign says and how it’s made. Signs identifying permanent rooms and spaces must include raised tactile characters and Grade 2 Braille so they’re readable by touch. They must also meet contrast and finish standards: high-contrast colors between text and background, and a non-glare finish that doesn’t create visual interference. These specifications come from ICC A117.1, the accessibility standard incorporated into the Ohio Building Code.
Not every sign in a facility carries the same requirements. Directional and informational signs have different rules than signs for permanent spaces, and certain temporary-use signs are exempt from the tactile requirements entirely.
Accessible Parking Signs in Ohio
Accessible parking spaces must be marked with the International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA), the blue-and-white wheelchair pictogram recognized across the United States. The bottom edge of the sign must be mounted at least 60 inches above the ground so it remains visible when a vehicle is parked in the space.
Van-accessible spaces require an additional designation: the sign must include the words “van accessible.” Ohio adds one more layer. Under Ohio Revised Code 3781.111, any new or replacement accessible parking sign posted on or after October 14, 1999 must carry a notice stating the fine for illegally parking in that space.
