Calgary Permits for Illuminated Commercial Signs

Municipal requirements should be considered before an electric sign is fabricated or installed. In Calgary, signs generally require a development permit before they’re erected, enlarged, relocated, constructed, or altered unless a specific exemption applies.

Applications for illuminated and structural signs require electrical details and structural drawings. Electrical permit fees also apply when a sign includes illumination. These municipal requirements are separate from our permit support, which includes managing the application and approval process and submitting sign variance applications on a client’s behalf.

Illumination Restrictions

Calgary prohibits sign illumination that resembles traffic signals or emergency lighting. In residential districts, internally illuminated signs are prohibited, while indirect illumination must be arranged to prevent light trespass onto adjacent parcels. Property zoning and the proposed lighting method therefore need review during project planning.

Digital Display Requirements

Digital display signs in Calgary require a development permit and an ambient light sensor, which adjusts output in response to surrounding light. Municipal rules also set a maximum luminance of 7,500 nits from sunrise to sunset in all districts. A nit is a unit of display brightness.
