What Do My Signs Need to Be Compliant?

It is important to ensure your signs are compliant for the safety of everyone on the job site.

Also, if you fail to procure the proper OSHA construction signs or your signs do not comply or are improperly located or installed on the job site, you can face heavy fines.

All OSHA-compliant signs must include the following:

  • Specific colors - OSHA has specific color requirements for danger, caution, and safety signs. For example, white letters on a red background.

  • Lettering - The letters on your signs must be a certain size, depending on the type and size of your signs. The font must be clear and easy to read.

  • Symbols or pictures - Symbols are often used to convey a message more quickly and effectively than just text.

  • Placement - Your signs must be placed in a specific location on your construction site where they are visible before entering dangerous areas.

Which Signs Are OSHA Mandated?

While there are many rules OSHA-approved signs must follow, including exact specifications for font size, colors, and placement, the most important signs to include in your sign package are:

  • Danger signs indicate an immediate hazard possibly resulting in serious injury or death. The text is white and on a red background and a black edge. Danger signs should only be used for extreme conditions. Examples include, but are not limited to, “Danger – Asphyxiation Hazard” or “Danger – High Voltage.”

  • Caution signs are used to warn against potential hazards or caution against unsafe practices. Caution signs must be yellow with black lettering and a black border. Caution signs should be used for conditions that are not immediately dangerous but could become so if the proper precautions are not taken. Some conditions warranting a caution sign are “Caution – Wet Floor” or “Caution – Forklift Traffic.”

  • Safety signs are used to communicate general safety information. The background on a safety sign must all be green; white is the only color used for the text against the green background. Any additional text must be black on a white background. They remind employees of safe practices, such as “Safety Glasses Required Beyond This Point.”

Other Important Job Site Signs

Other important signs commonly used on construction sites but are not OSHA required include:

  • Fire exit signs are red and white, with an arrow pointing in the direction of the exit.

  • First aid signs are white with a green cross.

  • Restroom signs are white with a picture of a person.

  • No smoking signs are red with a white circle and line through a picture of a cigarette.
