Create in Dimensions Using CNC

In today’s world, we talk a great deal about the digital world and experience. But everyday, at some point, we still turn off our computers and go interact with the physical world. We eat and talk and experience the world through our sensory inputs.

How we exchange information with our customers out here in this age-old space should never be neglected. A digital storefront may offer conveniences to customers, but it’s so much more difficult to develop a relationship with customers. Interactive experiences with customers in the tangible world provide foundations that build into long term contacts.

One of the creative tools we use to build these interactive experiences with customers is the CNC router. I want to write a bit today about how this tool can drive creativity and memorable encounters with customers.

What is it?

A CNC router is computer numerical-controlled cutting tool that can cut through many different types of surfaces, such as plastic, wood, glass, and aluminum. In the old days, to create memorable pieces in these types of materials, someone would have to manually cut through them with either hand driven or electric tools. This required a great deal of skill and time and patience. It was no easy job. The CNC Router, however, is controlled by a computer. It uses software, such as CAD, to create files that the router can then cut with ease and precision. A traditional router can move and cut in three directions which are usually referred to at the X, Y, and Z directions. The X-axis is usually the longest of the three running front to back. The Y-axis runs from left to right while the Z-axis runs up and down.

How does it work?

These machines are very efficient in that they work in all three directions in near perfect unison, giving this machine the capability of carving complex shapes. However, using one is actually a fairly simple process. First, you create a vector file in a program such as Illustrator. Next, that vector image is transformed into what’s known as G-Code. This G-Code is how we tell computerized machine tools how to move and what path to follow. This transformation turns the vector file into a set of instructions for the router to follow. Finally, the CNC router software reads the G-Code and cuts the material according to the instructions in it.

What can you make with a CNC router?

There’s almost no limit to what you can create with a computerized router. Since the requirement of skill for the manual cutting has been removed, you’re only limited by your own creativity. A CNC router can be used to produce items such as door carvings, interior and exterior decorations, wood panels, sign boards, wooden frames, moldings, and furniture. There is a near endless search on the internet of the things that are easily made with a computerized router. From toys to furniture, most things are possible.

Is the router cost effective?

There are actually several ways in which a CNC router can save a company money. Most obviously, there’s a much better chance materials will be cut correctly and with precision the first time, then if taking a chance with manual cutting. But a router saves you money on materials also. Because the computer program maximizes the material available when it cuts.
