Outdoor Signs Planned for Your Property & Brand

Exterior signage helps customers recognize your business, locate the right property, and understand where to go before they enter. Effective outdoor signs in Johnson City account for the building or site, viewing distance, traffic flow, and the message customers need at that location.

At FASTSIGNS® of Johnson City, TN, we can customize exterior signage around your colors, fonts, graphics, and logo. During your consultation, we’ll ask about your business, property, and marketing goals so we can recommend sign options suited to the intended placement and message.

Exterior Sign Types for Buildings & Commercial Properties

Building-mounted and freestanding signs serve different purposes. We’ll help you compare the available formats based on where the sign will be installed, how customers approach the property, and whether visibility after dark is important.

Our exterior signage solutions include:

Channel Letters: Individually formed letters create clear building identification and can be illuminated. Colors, fonts, and sizes can be coordinated with your brand and storefront.
Dimensional Letters: Add depth to a business facade or exterior surface. This format can present a company name or logo without a flat, printed appearance.
Monument Signs: These low-profile freestanding signs are typically placed near an entrance or roadway to identify the property and orient arriving customers.
Pylon Signs: Taller freestanding signs improve visibility from farther away, particularly along roadways and at properties shared by multiple tenants.
LED Signs: Illuminated options support nighttime visibility and may be used for building identification or changeable messaging, depending on the sign design.

Exterior Sign Design as a Visual Communication Strategy

The right mix of styles, sizes, and sign types depends on your business and the messages you want to communicate. Our design process considers logo prominence, readability, facade proportions, and the amount of information passing drivers or pedestrians can process quickly.

Exterior signage shouldn’t try to communicate everything at once. We help prioritize the name, direction, promotion, or other message customers need most while aligning the design with your broader visual communication strategy.

Exterior Sign Project Capabilities

Choosing an exterior sign company in Johnson City involves more than selecting a product from a list. The design, materials, lighting, mounting approach, installation conditions, and applicable approvals all need to fit the property.

Key project considerations include:

Customization: We collaborate with you to create signage that aligns with your brand identity and marketing objective.
Durability and Maintenance: Exterior signs need materials and finishes suited to the mounting location, installation environment, and expected weather exposure.
Professional Installation: Our installation services coordinate the prepared sign with the building, structure, mounting surface, electrical requirements when applicable, and site conditions.
Permitting Assistance: Navigating local regulations can be complex. We offer survey and permitting support, although requirements and approval paths vary by sign type, size, placement, zoning district, and property.
Energy-Efficient Options: We offer energy-efficient LED options for exterior sign projects that call for illumination or digital messaging.

Exterior Sign Project Management From Concept to Installation

We create visual communication solutions and can manage exterior sign projects from start to finish. Our project managers coordinate the work while you focus on running your business.

The exterior sign workflow may include:

Defining the business objective, primary message, and preferred sign type through content development
Reviewing the property, mounting location, viewing conditions, and site requirements
Developing artwork through graphic design that fits the brand and available sign area
Checking applicable permit, zoning, landlord, or property requirements
Coordinating production and installation for the approved project scope

Depending on the project, coordination may also involve a property owner, landlord, municipality, electrician, contractor, or installation crew. For a grand opening or broader signage update, we can also coordinate logo and business signage, awning signs, and ADA signs as part of the project plan.

Planning Exterior Signs in Johnson City

Businesses should confirm the applicable approval path before fabrication or installation. The City of Johnson City’s online portal accepts applications for building, trade, and sign permits, but requirements can vary according to the sign type, dimensions, placement, illumination, zoning district, and property.

Some locations may require additional review. For example, Johnson City Historic Zoning Commission records document review of proposed building signage, including window signs and illuminated lettering, through a Certificate of Appropriateness process for properties in a historic overlay. Historic, overlay, landlord, and property-specific requirements don’t apply uniformly, so permitting support doesn’t mean approval is automatic.

Our team can help organize the property information, sign concept, and project details needed to begin the process. The goal is to identify applicable requirements early and coordinate the approved exterior sign through production and installation.
