ADA Compliant Signage in Redwood City
Regulatory Signs, Safety Signs & Custom Accessible Signage for Bay Area Businesses
FASTSIGNS® of Redwood City, CA produces Regulatory Signs, Safety Signs, and Custom Accessible Signage for businesses throughout Redwood City and the surrounding Bay Area. We handle every step in-house: graphic design, compliance review, production, project management, and installation. That means you work with one team from the first conversation through final mounting. Not a sign printer in one state and an installer you find separately.
Our Redwood City location holds a 5.0 Google customer rating, and clients consistently cite our professionalism, quality, and on-time delivery. For compliance-sensitive signage, that reliability isn’t just a convenience. It’s the point.

The signage we produce falls into three distinct categories, each with its own placement rules and compliance requirements.
Regulatory & Warning Signs
Custom regulatory and warning signs communicate rules, legal requirements, and restrictions. They belong in stairwells, elevators, fire exits, entryways, and parking lots. They belong anywhere a visitor or employee needs to understand what’s permitted or required. Correctness and legibility aren’t optional here.
Workplace Safety Signs
We produce workplace safety signs and OSHA signage for both indoor and outdoor environments. These signs protect workers and visitors by conveying hazard information at a glance, before someone gets close enough to read fine print.
Custom Accessible Signage
Custom accessible signage covers far more than restroom signs. Any sign that identifies a permanent room or space, directs visitors to accessible features, or conveys facility information may require ADA compliance under federal Accessibility Guidelines. We produce custom accessible signage, including raised tactile characters, Grade 2 Braille, and pictograms.
California Compliance: Why Federal ADA Standards Aren’t Enough
California imposes accessibility requirements that exceed the federal ADA baseline in both technical detail and legal consequence. The California Building Standards Code (Title 24) sets stricter rules on character height, contrast, mounting placement, and Braille specifications. Meeting federal standards alone doesn’t mean a sign meets Title 24 requirements.
A few California-specific requirements that affect Redwood City businesses directly:
- Dual restroom signs: California requires both a tactile wall sign and a separate geometric symbol sign mounted on the door. That’s a two-sign requirement most other states don’t have.
- All-gender restroom signage: California AB 1732 requires single-occupant restrooms to display all-gender signage.
- Renovation triggers: Businesses undergoing renovation, change of occupancy, or permit activity are typically required to bring path-of-travel signage up to current ADA and Title 24 standards.
- Statutory exposure: California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act allows for statutory damages of at least $4,000 per accessibility violation, plus attorney fees. Signage errors can carry real financial consequences.
Legal compliance is ultimately the responsibility of the property owner or business operator. Our role is to bring a deep understanding of ADA standards to every project so your signs are produced and installed correctly from the start.
ADA Sign Specifications: What Compliance Actually Requires
ADA compliant signage in Redwood City must meet precise technical standards. Here’s what those standards cover:
Typography & Contrast
Signs must use a sans serif font. Text must contrast with the background. Tactile lettering must be uppercase and between 5/8 inch and 2 inches in height. Adjacent raised characters must be spaced at least 1/8 inch apart, measured between the two closest points of neighboring characters.
Braille & Tactile Characters
All ADA-compliant signs require both raised tactile characters and Grade 2 Braille. Braille must be placed below and centered to all text, with a minimum 3/8-inch space between Braille and other sign elements. Text must also sit at least 3/8 inch from the sign’s edge.
Pictograms
When a pictogram identifies a permanent space, tactile text descriptors are required. Common pictograms include wheelchair symbols and gender symbols for designated restrooms.
Mounting Height & Placement
The baseline of the lowest raised character must be at least 48 inches above the finished floor; the highest raised character must be no more than 60 inches. California Title 24 adds a further requirement: the geometric symbol sign mounted on the restroom door must be centered at 58 to 60 inches above the finished floor, measured from the centerline of the symbol. Signs must be installed on the latch side of the door and may not be mounted directly on a door. When latch-side space is insufficient, the sign goes on the nearest adjacent wall in a clearly visible location.
For bulk orders, just provide the specifics of each sign, and our team will review them for compliance before production begins.
Full-Service ADA Signage for Redwood City & Menlo Park
Our team includes visual communication professionals, graphic designers, and project managers who carry a project from initial assessment through installed sign. We offer graphic design, content development, project management, installation, and survey and permitting at our Redwood City location. You don’t need to manage multiple vendors or verify that your installer understands what your sign producer intended. We handle both sides.
That end-to-end model matters most for compliance-sensitive work. A correctly produced ADA sign installed at the wrong height or on the wrong surface is still a noncompliant sign. Keeping design, production, and installation under one roof helps reduce that risk.
