Coordinated Channel Letter Design & Project Management

A successful sign starts with more than choosing a letter style. Our project managers and graphic designers work with you to understand your priorities, brand standards, building conditions, and desired viewing experience. Property rules, sign permitting, mounting conditions, and electrical requirements may also shape the project before production begins.

Channel letter planning may address:

Brand Translation: Adapting a name, logo, colors, and other visual elements for dimensional fabrication.
Sign Placement: Determining how the proposed size and position relate to the commercial facade.
Illumination: Considering daytime readability, nighttime presentation, and applicable property or local requirements.
Mounting Conditions: Reviewing the building surface, attachment approach, service access, and installation needs.
Project Coordination: Managing design, production, delivery, permitting support, and sign installation.

Businesses use channel letters to identify storefronts, offices, restaurants, retail locations, healthcare facilities, and other commercial properties. We also coordinate sign and graphic projects for businesses in Stow and Tallmadge.

Channel Letter Construction & Illumination Options

Channel letters are custom-made three-dimensional letters or graphics commonly used as building identification signs. Typical construction may include aluminum returns, which form the sides of each letter, along with a durable backer and an acrylic face. LED illumination can improve visibility during daytime and nighttime operating conditions.

Common channel letter formats include:

Face Illuminated Channel Letters: Light passes through the letter face for a bright, direct presentation.
Reverse-Lit Letters: Light is cast behind the letters, creating a halo effect against the mounting surface.
Combination-Lit Letters: Front and rear illumination work together to create layered visual contrast.
Open-Face Letters: Internal lighting remains visible through an open or clear face treatment.

The right format depends on your brand identity, building architecture, viewing distance, operating conditions, and applicable requirements. Availability and approval may also vary by property and installation location.

How Channel Letters Mount to Commercial Facades

Channel letters may be mounted directly to a wall or installed using a raceway or backer. Raceway mounting places the letters and related components on a shared structure, while direct mounting attaches individual letters to the facade. Building materials, landlord requirements, electrical access, service needs, and the intended appearance can influence the approach.

A site survey can clarify dimensions, attachment points, visibility, and installation conditions. These findings also guide design and permitting before fabrication begins.

Akron Signage & Facade Planning Considerations

Akron facade guidance recommends signage that is proportionate to the building and site and compatible with the surrounding architecture, materials, colors, and proportions. The city’s Great Streets facade guidance identifies halo-lit and face-lit channel letters as preferred illuminated signage styles within that program. It also advises that lighting shouldn’t create glare or distract from nearby streets and properties.

Requirements may vary by district, property, sign type, and installation conditions, so we review each project individually. Electrical sign work is addressed according to applicable licensing and regulatory requirements and may involve a properly licensed electrical provider.
