How We Manage Your Sign Project

We begin with the business’s brand, visibility goals, installation location, and design requirements. Our graphic design and content development capabilities create a coordinated brand message rather than treating the letters as an isolated building feature.

Our services cover each major stage of the project:

Concept & Graphic Design: We develop a visual solution around the client’s brand, communication goals, and proposed sign location.
Survey & Permitting: Our team collects measurements, assesses the mounting area and installation conditions, and procures appropriate permits for the property and sign design.
Project Management: We coordinate design, permit review, fabrication, and installation planning.
Installation: We provide installation services for the completed signage.

Permit review, fabrication requirements, installation conditions, and electrical coordination can influence the project schedule. Identifying these considerations early helps establish a clear scope before fabrication begins.

Lighting & Construction Options for Dimensional Lettering

Illumination changes how dimensional lettering appears during the day and after dark. The right approach depends on the desired visual effect, building surface, ambient light, and street-level viewing conditions.

Front-Lit Letters
Front-lit designs direct illumination through the face of each character. They commonly pair acrylic sign faces with metal returns, which form the sides of the individual letters. Exterior components typically use durable finishes and sealed construction intended for outdoor conditions.

Halo-Lit or Reverse-Lit Letters
These designs direct light behind each character, creating a glow on the mounting surface. Because the wall becomes part of the effect, its color, texture, and reflectivity are important design considerations.

Combination-Lit Letters
Combination-lit designs use more than one illumination effect within the same sign. For example, light may shine through the face and behind the letters. The final configuration should complement the brand and remain readable under the conditions where the sign will be installed.

Letter size alone doesn’t determine visibility. Stroke width, viewing distance, mounting height, building surface, and surrounding light all affect readability and should be considered together as the layout is developed.

Chicago Sign Permits for Dimensional Letter Signs

The Chicago Department of Buildings issues sign permits, and most on-premise signs require one. Sign regulations appear in Title 13 and Title 17 of the Municipal Code of Chicago, including Chapter 17-12 of the Chicago Zoning Ordinance. Applicable requirements can vary with the design, mounting location, building, and property status.

A sign or supporting apparatus that extends over a sidewalk, parkway, street, or alley requires separate public-way review. A Public Way Use Permit authorizes the installation over public property, while a City Council Ordinance is coordinated through the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection and the relevant ward alderman’s office.

Signs positioned more than 24 feet above street or grade level require engineered stamped drawings prepared by a licensed architect or structural engineer. The permit application must also identify a licensed general contractor. Historic or landmark designations can introduce additional exterior-sign review, so property-specific requirements should be confirmed before the design is finalized.

Our team performs surveys and procures appropriate permits to support signage compliance. We’re responsible for meeting the licensing and regulatory requirements that govern electrical work and sign installation in our jurisdiction. We account for applicable review requirements while coordinating the broader sign project.
