Construction signs are a necessary aspect of any construction site. Proper construction site signage is clear, professionally fabricated and warn people of potential dangers while letting them know what is and isn't allowed on premesis. Familiarizing yourself with the different types of construction signs, their uses and where to place them helps workers stay safe. There are four main types of construction signs: warning signs, mandatory signs, prohibition signs, and safe condition signs.

Warning signs are used to caution people about potential dangers. They are bright yellow and have a black outlined triangle. Any text written on the sign needs to be in black with a yellow background. Warning signs are typically at least twenty-four by thirty-six inches to ensure they are seen. These signs are critical on the construction worksites to prevent injury, or even death. Some examples of warning signs include:

• Dangerous area ahead

• Falling rocks

• High wind area

Mandatory signs give instructions on what people must do in order to stay safe. They are round with a blue background and white text. They are often mounted on poles or the side of a building. Some examples of mandatory signs include:

• Wear a hard hat

• Use eye protection

• No smoking

Prohibition signs are used to indicate what actions people are not allowed to do. They have a round red circle with a slash through it. The background is white with black text. The slash crosses the text clearly indicating that action is prohibited on the construction site. Some examples of prohibition signs include:

• No entry

• Do not touch

• Keep out

• No cell phones

Safe condition signs let people know when it is safe to enter an area. Safe conditions signs combined with prohibition and warning signs clearly let staff and visitors know where the safe areas are and what actions are allowed and what is not. They are rectangular with a green background and white text. Some examples of safe condition signs include:

• Fire Exit

• First aid

• End of the danger zone

Fire equipment signs are used to show the location of fire extinguishers and other fire safety gear. They often have directional arrows to guide construction staff quickly to the fire equipment. They are made of a red rectangular sign with white images or text. Some examples of fire equipment signs include:

• Fire extinguisher

• Pull station

• Emergency exit
