ADA Sign Design Standards: What We Confirm Before Production

ADA compliant signs are governed by specific dimensional, typographic, and placement requirements under the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. These are the specifications our quality assurance process checks before any sign goes into production:

Contrast & Typography
Signs must display high contrast between background and text colors. Typography must use a sans-serif font with no italic, oblique, script, or decorative features.

Tactile Characters & Braille
All ADA compliant signs identifying permanent rooms must include both raised characters and braille. Tactile lettering must be uppercase and between 5/8 inch and 2 inches in height. Braille must be placed below and centered to all text, with a minimum 3/8-inch space from other sign elements, including borders. Text must also maintain a minimum 3/8-inch space from the sign edge.

Pictograms
If a sign includes a pictogram identifying a permanent space, tactile text descriptors are also required alongside it.

Mounting Height
The baseline of the lowest raised character must sit at least 48 inches above the finished floor, and the baseline of the highest raised character must not exceed 60 inches.

Door Placement
Interior ADA signs must be installed on the latch side of the door for the room being labeled and can’t be mounted directly on a door. If the latch-side wall doesn’t provide enough clearance, the sign may be installed on the nearest adjacent wall where it remains clearly visible.
