Author: FASTSIGNS® of Louisville, KY

Directional signs, also known as wayfinding signs, help people find their way from point A to point B. They are often found in large offices, hospitals, airports, and other busy locations. Today, we discuss the importance of directional sign systems.Sixt Wayfinding Sign

What are the Key Components of Directional Sign Systems?

When designing a system of directional signs, the first step is to clearly define the main objective of the signs. Consider these questions to help with the process:

  • Where do people need to go?

  • What type of business is the facility?

  • How large is the building or campus?

  • How many visitors pass through each day?

  • What type of environment is the company (indoor, outdoor, etc.)?

  • What is the average age of the visitors?

  • Are the visitors local or from out of town?

  • Do rooms need identification?

Sign Locations

Once the main objective of the sign system has been identified, the next step is to determine the locations of the signs.

The most important locations for directional signs are:

  • Entrances and exits

  • Hallways

  • Stairwells

  • Lobbies

  • Parking lots

  • Common areas

  • Classrooms and offices

  • Restrooms

  • Near elevators and escalators

Types of Directional Signs

Creating a directional sign system requires the use of several different types of signs. Here are the four basic types and where they are used:

Informational Signs give people general facts about a facility. They are typically placed near the entrance, on the exterior of the building, and in hallways. Examples include location hours and general building rules.

Identification Signs label specific rooms, departments, and areas within a facility. They are placed near the entrances of offices, classrooms, and restrooms. Examples include: "Restroom", "Exit", "Classroom 103", and "Conference Room B".

Regulatory Signs provide information about the rules and regulations of the facility. They are typically placed near the entrance, lobby, and common areas. Examples include: "No smoking," "Do not enter," and "Fire exit only."

Wayfinding Signs provide people with specific directions to their destination. They include arrows and text to tell people where to go. Wayfinding signs are placed throughout the facility, in hallways, near stairwells, and in other busy locations. Examples include: "To the left for the elevators" and "Turn right for the conference room."

Tips for a Cohesive Sign System

  • Use simple and easy-to-read text

  • Place the signs in logical locations

  • Always use a consistent font and color scheme throughout the facility

  • Include braille on signs for the visually impaired

  • Ensure high contrast between the text and background

  • Include arrow tails (otherwise, they look like triangles)

  • Group locations with the same general direction

  • Label arrows (signs with only arrows are confusing)

The Benefits of a Directional Sign System

  • Increased Customer Satisfaction: Customers who can easily find their way are more likely to be satisfied with their experience.

  • Improved Customer Retention: When customers can easily find their way, they are more likely to return.

  • Reduced Liability: A well-designed sign system helps prevent accidents by clearly marking exits, stairwells, and other areas.

  • Improved Employee Productivity: Employees who can easily find their way around are more productive.

  • Aesthetically Pleasing: A well-designed sign system is an attractive addition to a facility.
