No matter the size of the business, signs are an important part of marketing. It’s estimated signs generate 50% of all new business. For many industry sectors, it's important to have eye-catching and highly visible signs.

Common Types of Lighted Signs

Lightbox signs are comprised of a metal case which holds a translucent panel. This panel is customized with a business name, logo, and other important information. Behind the panel is where the lighting elements are housed. This allows light to shine through the panel, illuminating the sign.

Channel letter signs feature individual 3D letters illuminated by a lighting element housed behind the panel and inside the letter. They can be front-lit, back-lit, and combo-lit. Front-lit letters have a translucent panel covering the lighting element, which illuminates the panel. Back-lit letters have the lighting element housed behind the letter and an opaque front, enabling the light to shine back against the wall or surface where the sign is mounted. Combo-lit letters have a translucent front panel and are also back-lit for a halo effect.

Pylon signs are freestanding signs and are typically used for businesses near a highway. They are tall and slender with large, visible sign panels. The panels are usually acrylic or polycarbonate and illuminated from within or behind. Pylon signs typically features some or all the business tenants in the plaza.

How to Choose a Lighted Sign

Type: For a sign visible from a distance, a pylon sign may be the best option. A lightbox sign would be a good choice for a more subtle sign. A channel letter sign would typically spell the name of the business or a call to action like “Chinese Food.”

Size: Make sure the sign is big enough to be seen but not overwhelming. The location of the business will also determine the size of the sign. A larger sign may be recommended if the company is located on a busy street.

Lighting: There are two main lighting styles: fluorescent and LED. Fluorescent bulbs are less expensive but don't last as long as LED bulbs and don’t shine as bright. LED bulbs are more expensive but last longer and use less energy.

Material: Acrylic and polycarbonate are the most common materials for lighted signs. Acrylic is less expensive, but it's not as durable as polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is more expensive, but it's more durable and withstands weathering better than acrylic. Aluminum is also popular for lighted signs because it's even more durable and weather resistant.

Design: The sign should be designed to match the business’s branding. It should be eye-catching and visible, and easy to read.

Installation: Businesses should have the sign installed by a professional company who has experience installing lighted signs. This guarantees the sign is installed correctly and to code.

Maintenance: The sign must be regularly maintained to guarantee it remains in good condition.
